This is a cover version of Peter Gabriel's classic track 'Games Without Frontiers'. I released my original cover of this song in 2003 on my album Without Within. This is a slightly shorter version of that original.
GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS - CHARITY RELEASE
As you may or may not know I recorded a cover version of Peter Gabriel's classic track "Games Without Frontiers" in 2003. This brilliant song, which compares global wars to children playing games, unfortunately never goes out of fashion and with the appalling invasion of Ukraine by Russia seems more relevant now than ever.
I was, and still am a huge fan of Peter Gabriel, so it was quite nerve racking attempting to cover one of his songs, especially one that is so iconic and well known. However, I went ahead anyway, and got the track to a point that I was pleased with.
On Peter Gabriel’s original, Kate Bush sang the backing vocals, giving it another layer of artistic distinction. I was very fortunate to be put in touch with an amazing singer song writer/musician called Happy Rhodes who has an absolutely amazing vocal range, and has often been compared to Kate Bush. She agreed to sing the backing vocals for my cover version which enhanced the track immeasurably and gave it a beautiful reference to the original
Recently I was looking through old files, various old discs and tapes trying to find another track and it’s component parts to see if it could be remixed, when I re-discovered 2 more versions of Games Without Frontiers that I had forgotten about. I had made these alternative mixes at the same time as recording my original cover, but they were never released, I’m not sure why.
Although they were produced 20 years ago, on listening I felt that still stood the test of time pretty well, so I thought it would be good to release them. They have been remastered, but apart from that are exactly as they were when I first recorded them.
I will be releasing these 2 'new' never before heard mixes next week and giving all the proceeds to The British Red Cross Society to help displaced Ukrainian families in the UK. It will be released digitally on all major platforms.
